Turtle Beach Recon 50X/Recon 50p Gaming Headset Review
Introduction
The Turtle Beach Recon 50X/Recon 50p is a low-cost gaming headset with a good microphone. These headphones are lightweight and simple to use, but the build quality is inferior to that of comparable earphones and game headsets in their price range. They also don’t fit around your ears, the cup is a little shallow, as well as the pads, are a little stiff. On the plus side, the microphone is removable, allowing you to use them outside, but they aren’t as adaptable as some of the other versions mentioned below. The Turtle Beach Recon 70 and Recon 50X/Recon 50P models are quite similar, however, the Recon 70 may be a better alternative because of its more comfortable shape and improved sound profile. The Recon 50x, on the other hand, has a superior microphone and outperforms the Recon 70 in this regard. Overall, the Recon 70’s microphone has high recording quality, making it a solid choice for gaming..

Style
The Turtle Beach Recon 50X/Recon 50p appears to be low-cost. The mic is removable, giving them a much more casual over-ear look that may be used outside. The fairly flamboyant color palette, lack of proper cushioning, and plasticky build quality, on the other hand, don’t look fantastic. The stereo audio wire is not removable and is attached to each ear cup, which might be inconvenient. On the plus side, they have appropriately sized circular ear cups and a small headband that stops the headphones from protruding from your head.
Comfort
The Turtle Beach Recon 50X/Recon 50p has an uncomfortable fit that doesn’t sit as comfortably around the ears as some of the headsets we’ve tested, such as the Turtle Beach Stealth 300. The ear cups appear to be pretty spacious and well-padded, but the pads are rigid and the aperture they generate is insufficient for all listeners. The headband is minimally cushioned, but because they’re so light, you won’t notice. They will not be the most pleasant to wear for extended periods of gaming. The Turtle Beach Recon 70 is a more comfy Turtle Beach headset.
Controls
The Turtle Beach Recon 50X/50P has a game control layout that is comparable to the Logitech G Pro Gaming Headset. They also include a speed dial that is quick and simple to operate but lacks distinct notches. On the plus side, the dial has distinct endpoints, so you can tell when you’ve achieved maximum volume by touch. They also include a simple on/off switch again for the microphone. Unfortunately, their cord isn’t detachable, so they lack an additional control system that will function better on mobile, which is a bit frustrating given that you can detach their mic and utilize them as standard casual headphones outdoors.
Breathability
The Turtle Beach Recon 50X/Recon 50p is quite breathable for an over-ear design because the cups do not completely enclose the ears. They partially lay on certain ears, making them slightly cooler to wear when compared to other shuttered ear headphones with non-porous pads. They won’t be ideal for more rigorous activities, but if you can get beyond the uncomfortable fit, they should be good for leisure listening and gaming.
Portability
These headphones do not fold into a smaller size. The ear cups do lay flat, however owing to the angle of the cups, it doesn’t save much room and instead makes them broader. Unfortunately, this means that, like other gaming headsets, they will be difficult to carry around and on your person, and because their build quality is a bit shaky and they do not come with a bag or pouch, they will also be difficult to toss into your backpack. Check out all the Turtle Beach Battle Buds, a distinctive in-ear alternative, if you want something with considerably better portability.
Case
There is no case or pouch included with these headphones.
Build Quality
The build quality is poor and plasticky, and it will not survive as long as other headsets we’ve tested. The material used for the headbands is fragile and cheap, and the cable isn’t detachable and is a little thin, so if it snaps, you’ll have to buy a new headset. On the plus side, the delicate quality of construction keeps them lightweight, as well as the ear cushions, are sufficiently thick to withstand a few inadvertent drops. The microphone also seems more sturdy and superior than that of the remainder of the quality of construction. Overall, they are not the worst-built devices, but they seem like toys in comparison to everyone else in their price category, such as the HyperX Cloud Stinger.
Stability
The Turtle Beach Recon 50X/Recon 50p is rather stable. They’re just snug enough on the head to not slide around much. The ear cups do not even slide or move about as much as most of the larger gaming headsets. Unfortunately, because their cord is not removable, if it becomes snagged by something, it will rip the earphones off your head.
Recording Quality
The boom mic has outstanding recording quality. The LFE (low-frequency extension) frequency is set at 20Hz, which is excellent. As a result, recorded/transmitted voice sounds full-bodied. The HFE (high-frequency extension) of 9.8kHz is also excellent, implying that recorded speech will be detailed and present. The reaction between both the LFE and HFE points is smooth and even, resulting in natural-sounding speech.
Imaging
The imaging performance is outstanding. The weighted group latency is 0.14, which is excellent. The GD graph also demonstrates that the overall group latency is within audibility. Because the huge spikes in frequency response below 20Hz are not audible, they should have no discernible influence on the sound. Furthermore, the speed, intensity, and phase response of our test unit’s L/R drivers were very well-matched. This is necessary for proper positioning and localization of items in the stereo field (chorus, instruments, video game effects).
Noise Handling
The boom microphone of the Turtle Beach Recon 50X/Recon 50p is good at noise handling. In our SNR test, it obtained a speaking ratio of 26dB, indicating that it can effectively differentiate speech from ambient noise even in very noisy environments.

In conclusion of Turtle Beach Recon 50X/Recon 50p
Even when compared to other cheap headsets, the Turtle Beach Recon 50 is incredibly affordable. However, you get what you pay for, with a cheap-feeling construction and subpar sound. Its microphone quality is surprisingly good for its price point. But anyone looking for a low-cost headset should seriously consider investing $10 more for a better alternative.
